Poultry processing in North Africa

SERVICES FOR POULTRY PROJECTS

HVA International's Head Office staff includes experts in poultry production, animal health and poultry production. In addition several experts in animal production and animal health have been assigned on long-term secondment to HVA International's projects in Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

HVA International has the expertise to secure the supply of feed for poultry projects. With its background in agricultural production and agro-processing HVA International is well equipped to explore sources of locally available (by-)products for the production of poultry feed.

As required HVA International has in-house expertise in engineering (for feed mills, storage facilities, poultry housing and poultry processing plants), economics, marketing and management information systems (MIS). In addition, HVA has a continuously updated database of Associate Consultants including many experts specialised in poultry production, animal health and related fields.

Based on long standing collaboration, HVA International has well established links with national and international research and training organisations, animal health services and producers of breeding stock. Through these organisations HVA International can easily mobilise specific specialised expertise and services and organise tailored training courses and study tours, as required by a project.

HVA International has its own procurement department with extensive experience to supply veterinary and other inputs as well as equipment and machinery for poultry projects.

HVA International has the capability to provide the full range of consultancy, technical assistance, engineering and management services required for integrated poultry projects. These services may cover all stages of a project from initial planning, through project implementation to project evaluation and review:

Project preparation and planning

	Sector studies to support the establishment of policies and programmes for development of the poultry industry
	Marketing studies
	Feasibility studies for poultry farms, processing plants and feed mills
	Preparation of poultry farm lay-outs and basic engineering for poultry processing plants, including utilities and waste treatment.

Project implementation

	Technical assistance for rehabilitation, expansion or establishment of new (integrated) poultry projects
	Consulting engineering for the rehabilitation and/or construction of poultry processing plants
	Services for procurement of machinery, equipment, breeding stock and inputs
	Start up of poultry farms and processing plants, including establishment of good production practices and quality assurance procedures, training of staff and implementation of data recording systems. .
	Privatisation and restructuring of poultry production enterprises

Poultry project management

	Operational management
	Operational support, e.g. in the field of poultry nutrition, flock health, flock husbandry practices, hatchery practices, detailed planning and data recording and analysis.
	Poultry management audits to identify inefficiencies and constraints to production, resulting in practical recommendations and solutions.

Management of processing plants

	Operational management
	Developing production processes adapted to local conditions and markets
	Quality assurance
	Technical support (e.g. establishing replacement schedules and preventive maintenance programmes, workshop management)
	Waste management
	Technical audits, including utility consumption to identify inefficiencies and constraints to production, resulting in practical recommendations and solutions.

	Organising marketing of produce and input supply

Training

	On the job training as part of technical assistance or operational management
	Organising specialised training courses
	Preparing manuals for poultry management, farm and hatching operations, processing, quality assurance and repair and maintenance of equipment and installations.

Management information systems (MIS)

	Development, supply and installation of MIS specific for poultry projects, including management, store inventory management, monitoring of processing data and sales.
	Training of staff in operating the MIS and associated administrative procedures.

Project evaluation and review

Mid term review or final evaluation of projects financed by international funding agencies.
