Irrigation in North Africa

IRRIGATION AND DRAINAGE

HVA International’s reputation in consulting engineering services and technical assistance for irrigation projects has been firmly established in the 1970s and 1980s by the implementation of irrigation systems for integrated sugar projects in Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Sudan and Tanzania. Since then, HVA has been involved in irrigation projects for both small and large-scale production of a wide range of crops.

HVA International has gained in-depth experience in the design, implementation and management of all types of field irrigation systems. Its irrigation experts have the know how to assess and correct the problems of poorly irrigated land and have developed solutions for irrigated difficult soils such as vertisols and soils with high alkaline or salt levels.

Some recent examples of irrigation projects executed by HVA International are highlighted below:

bullet

Omdurman Agricultural project, Sudan (2004, privately financed by AAAID).
Feasibility study for the development of large scale irrigated production of cereals, oil seeds and other suitable crops within an area of about 40,000 ha. Including: selection of suitable areas for development, selection of crops and production systems and basic design of field layout, irrigation systems, infrastructure and other facilities.

bullet

Taha El Roubi Agricultural project, Sudan (2003-2004, privately financed).
Feasibility study for the establishment of a new integrated Sugar project including determination of the most adequate irrigation system’s requirements for optimum cane yields and cane cycles.

bullet

Rehabilitation and Expansion of the Savannah Sugar Project, Nigeria (1993-2000), financed by the African Development Bank)
HVA designed the expansion (1,300ha) of the gravity irrigation system, prepared the tender documents and supervised land development works (levelling, field canals and field structures) and the construction of the main irrigation system including water division structures, pipeline and refurbishment of a major pump station. The works were executed by several local contractors. The existing irrigation system covering 5,500ha is being rehabilitated with technical assistance of HVA.

bullet

Integrated dairy project, Syria (1997, privately financed)
Site evaluation and feasibility study for an integrated dairy farm with a dairy herd of 2,500 animals and 1,000ha irrigated fodder crop production.

bullet

Mambilla Tea Integrated Development Program, Nigeria (1993-1998, financed by the EU)
Consulting engineering for the construction of a 500ha overhead irrigation system and land development for more than 200ha tea.

bullet

Drainage and water management of date palm groves at Rjim Maatoug, Tunisia (1996-1998, financed by the EU)
Diagnostic study to assess requirements and possibilities for installing a drainage system for a date palm irrigation scheme. The assignment includes monitoring and evaluation of the study to design the drainage system and prepare the tender documents for the eventual construction works. A follow up of the assignment will include supervision of the construction works.

bullet

Gash Delta project, Sudan (1987-1995, financed by DGIS)
HVA designed and implemented a pilot project for rehabilitation of the old Gash Delta cotton irrigation scheme (basin irrigation). Based on the results of the pilot project HVA experts developed practical solutions for better controlling and monitoring irrigation at field level and on improving agricultural practices. Improved irrigation and agronomic practices and new crops were widely tested in field trials and have been introduced to farmers by extension programmes.
Also a river training study has been conducted to identify possibilities to improve the water intake from the river and to protect the river banks from floods.

bullet

Um Dom farm project, Sudan (1989-1992, financed by Client/AAAID)
Upgrading agronomic and irrigation practices on a farm producing vegetables for export, through demonstrating improved irrigation (suitable for vertisols) and crop husbandry.
