BACKGROUND OF PROJECT
|
|
The
factory had been commissioned in 1973 and had an initial capacity of 1,500
tonne cane per day (tcd). It was designed to process sugar cane from the
4,000ha Estate and from out-growers (about 1,000ha). As Tanzania had
insufficient experts available, HVA International was requested to provide
operational and general management to run the factory and estate and to
provide engineering assistance for expansion of the factory.

SCOPE OF WORK
|
|
Management services and engineering assistance provided by HVA International
covered several periods between 1975 and 1992, including:

Technical and technological engineering studies on the existing factory
with a view to the rehabilitation and expansion of the existing factory
from 1,500 to 2,000 tcd.

Preparation of contract documents for the factory extension, evaluation of
tenders and supervision on construction and installation works.
|
 |
Assisting with securing funds for the rehabilitation and extension of the
factory.
|
 |
Operational management with special attention for Improvement of
processing methods, establishment of preventive maintenance programmes,
improvement of administrative procedures and training of production and
management staff.

Implementation of a computerised management information system (MIS),
including training of staff.
|
By
the end of the contract the factory produced around 27,000t of plantation
white sugar per annum, which is close to 100% installed capacity utilisation.
