REHABILITATION AND EXPANSION OF THE SAVANNAH SUGAR PROJECT, NIGERIA

ASSIGNMENT

 

Technical and engineering assistance for the rehabilitation of a 4,000t tcd sugar factory and for increasing sugar cane production through rehabilitation (5,500 ha) and expansion (1,300ha) of a gravity irrigation system and improvement of field mechanisation, harvesting and transport systems and agricultural practices.

BACKGROUND OF PROJECT

 

Rehabilitation of the Savannah sugar complex, which started operation in 1980, is required to prevent deterioration of the estate and factory, and to increase cane production to utilise the factory at its designed capacity.

 

SCOPE OF WORK

Factory overhaul and rehabilitation:
Implementing an overhaul program to secure continuity of sugar production
Preparation of detailed designs for factory
rehabilitation, preparation of tender specifications,
tender evaluation and supervision of contractors for the installation and construction works

Rehabilitation and expansion of the irrigation system:
Design of a gravity irrigation system for 1,300ha new cane area (field layout, land leveling (furrow irrigation), pump station, canals, drainage system and structures)
Preparation of tender documents, evaluation of tenders and supervision of land leveling and construction

executed by several local contractors

Technical assistance for the rehabilitation of the existing irrigation system (5,500ha)

Improving cane field mechanisation, harvesting and transport systems, including preparation of tender specification for new equipment and machinery.

Operational and management support, improving production practices and work methods and advising on organisational structure and job descriptions

bullet

Preparing training manuals and organising formal training courses to supplement on-the-job training

bullet

Introducing proper store inventory management and a computerised management information system.
