BACKGROUND
OF PROJECT
|
|
The
privatised dairy sector in Georgia is not equipped to take full advantage of
its potential (favourable climate, land resources, considerable part of
domestic demand presently satisfied with dairy products produced from
imported milk powder).
The
project will support a co-operative farm in the humid sub-tropical region of
Georgia to develop into an integrated dairy farm, as an example for
efficient market-oriented dairy production based on Dutch technology.
|
SCOPE OF
WORK
|
|
Technical assistance and training and supply of pregnant heifers, farm
equipment, dairy processing equipment, feed mill equipment for the following
project activities:
 |
Development of the
Tkiri Co-operative farm (160 ha):
- rehabilitation of farm buildings and utilities - establishing 30ha of grass-legume pastures
for grazing, green chop and silage production - planting 25ha of grain crops for concentrate
feed - establishing a small feed mill - establishing a dairy herd based on the
importation of 35
pregnant HF heifers
|
 |
Establishing a milk processing plant to provide an outlet for the milk of
the co-operative farm and to provide marketing support for smallholder
dairy farmers
|
 |
Setting up a training/extension centre to support smallholder dairy
farmers (extension/training, milk collection, feed supply, herd
improvement). The centre operates a herd management information system as
a tool for monitoring performance and reproduction parameters of
participating farmers as a basis for specific advise.
|
Conducting a dairy sector survey to obtain market information relevant to
the project and to identify prospects for dairy development in general.
